That may have something to do with the fact of the 8ft tall tree glowing in the corner of the living room. Last weekend I ordered a tree and had it delivered only to find myself without any lights or decoration to adorn it with. Apparently, I hadn’t kept those from last year as I’d thought. So, after a week of a lonely, though quite pleasant smelling addition to the living room my roommate Tealle and I went out in search of some lights. I was instantly drawn to the LED white lights with their sure brightness, while Tealle thought it would be a good idea to add some color. So 5 strands, totaling nearly 120ft later we now have what I do believe is the most lights I’ve ever had on a tree. A couple of boxes of candy canes later and the once lonely tree turned out to be a great combination effort and spectacularly bright.

Yesterday morning started off as usual. I woke up at 7:30AM, 7:52AM, 8:20AM and finally rolled out of bed at 8:40AM. This being my usual routine; I always have the intention of going into work earlier (to get off work earlier) but just can’t bring myself to get going in the morning.

So by a quarter past 9 I was out for my normal brisk walk to work when I got to the first corner I discovered an LAX squad car. Odd I thought, but not unusual given how close I live to the airport. So I continued my zigzag path to work 1/2 asleep. Got to the second corner and there was yet another squad car.

At this point I began to think something was afoot. Standing at the corner I looked down to the left, straight ahead and to my right. Squad car, squad car and yes, there was yet another squad car. I was obviously walking right through the middle of something and the cops were too preoccupied to inform me of the apparent danger. So I continued my walk weary of the other pedestrians trapped with me in the labyrinth of cops.

As I passed an elderly couple the man turned to me and said, “Did you see him?” Completely befuddled I asked, “See who?” “The guy they’re after, that cop up there (indicating to the squad car from which he just passed) asked if I’d seen a young bald headed Mexican with blood on his t-shirt”. Blood!? What exactly had I found myself walking into? With a quick reply, “No, that’s grrreat! I didn’t know what was going on”. He chuckled, the old man was enjoying every minute of it!

Not so eager to run into the suspect as the old man appeared to be I quickened my pace weary of all bushes and blind corners until no squad cars were in sight. And then I recalled how nine times out of 10 on cops the suspect is actually just outside the area they think they have him trapped in and quckly resumed my hasty walk to work. Sigh. What a way for me to start the day.

Fires, lots of fires! You can’t watch the news the past few days without 80% being devoted exclusively to the fact that Southern California has been set ablaze, again. I say again, because it would seem most Californians have the memory of a gold fish when it comes to wildfires. True it’s devastating, especially now that they’ve taken lives and injured others, but just like being surprised by a tornado in Tornado Alley if you live in Malibu or San Diego wildfires are inevitable.

The Santa Ana winds are doing their part to whip the fires in unpredictable directions with Hurricane force gusts upwards of 100mph. At last count there is 15 separate fires between Santa Barbara, Malibu and sprinkled throughout all the way down to San Diego.

Sunday night we could see what would have to be the Malibu (based on the general location) fire across the dark ocean from Dockweiler State Beach. We watched as the flames swallowed the hillside carving a “halo-like” ring off in the distance. Why was I at the Beach at night, why the bonfire pits of course! Seemed appropriate? That and I’d been persuaded with the temptation of smore-goodness.

Although the fires themselves are far enough away to not be too worried just yet the smoke has made its way down the coast and looms over El Segundo. Tonight between 5 and 7pm, just after work on my way home I watched a blotted sun glow an eerie orange through the smoke filled sky. The air was heavy on my lungs and made it difficult to breathe all the way home only to return to a smoke filled apartment from a window left open. To top things off, tonight at Ralph’s grocery store I had to wait as the cashier found a key to the cigarette cabinet! Apparently, the smoke filled sky wasn’t enough for the devout smoker ahead of me in line.

“Your blog is dying like all other blogs! 5 days and no posts!” a helpful reminder that my blog is languishing, thanks Chad. Now, in an effort to prove him wrong…

Blogging isn’t natural, by the time I’d get around to posting something I’ve already had the time to process the information, share it with those in my inner circle or whoever is in closest proximity and then recycle that energy to focus on something new. The only hope therefore of maintaining a blog is to condition myself with a routine. Blogging is much like exercise, shaving or brushing your teeth the longer you wait between repeating these activities the harder and less natural they feel.

The easiest way to start a routine is in increments. Can’t try to do 100 pushups your first day and expect your body to accept doing the same the next. The human body just doesn’t work that way. Instead, start with something simple like 5 or 10. Now true, 5 pushups a day won’t give you those perfectly sculpted abs but that’s not the initial goal. The initial goal is to condition oneself into a routine. Once the routine has been set you can then begin to increment the activity.

Applying this logic to blogging means I’ll be writing a lot of short, poor quality posts just to condition myself into the routine of blogging. So, please bear with me as I make a fledgling step into blogging.

For those unaware, today, October 15th is “Blog Action Day“. What is that you ask? It’s a day (picked at random) where thousands of bloggers unite and create discussion on their blogs about a single topic. This year’s topic is the environment.

So, on that note … the environment. That’s a toughie, what is there to say about the environment that wouldn’t come across as rhetoric?

While most people will take this as an opportunity to speak out against pollution, global warming (less pirates = global warming), saving mother earth and driving low emission electric or hybrid cars that are a danger to the blind! I would like to remind people what the definition of environment is.

An environment is the area in which something exists or lives

So, for the good or bad, the current condition of our environment is responsible for sustaining our current existence. Now, if we were to change the condition of our environment, inevitably, it would cease to sustain the existence of those it currently sustains.

So the next time you think about curing global warming, know this, doing so could cause extinction for Big Foot, Butterflies, or yes even kittens!
